Abstract
The article highlights the patterns of formation and development of Ukrainian lexicography in the 70s of the twentieth century. In the context of the development of modern Ukrainian literary language. This period has been a result of the “Khrushchev’s thaw”, when the average annual issue of Ukrainian dictionaries reached an average of 20 titles per year. However, since the mid-1970s there has been a steady decline in the number of Ukrainian dictionaries, ideological work aimed at total Russification of the linguistic space, “liberation” of the Ukrainian dictionary from historicism, archaic words, religious terms, words of special narrow use, dialects and borrowings from European languages. All these aspects were aimed at depriving the lexicographical works of many original features of the Ukrainian language slowing down the growth of national consciousness and activity of Ukrainians. However, in the 1970s a multi-volume Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language was published, a valuable lexicographical achievement of twentieth-century Ukrainian lexicography. The Dictionary of the Old Ukrainian Language, the Inversion Dictionary, the Dictionary of Winged Words, the Shevchenko's words Dictionary, and others were also published. In addition, valuable vocabulary was published by the Ukrainian diaspora in the United States, Canada, and France. The Encyclopedia of Ukrainian Studies, published by the Taras Shevchenko Scientific Society, became an extremely valuable encyclopedic reference book. This work is stimulated the publication of a number of Ukrainian-language encyclopedic publications in Soviet Ukraine in the 1970s. In our study, a description and scientific analysis of the main Ukrainian dictionaries of the 70s of the twentieth century, through the prism of which the main aspects of the development of the lexical structure of literary language are reflected; the significance of lexicographical work in the history of the Ukrainian literary language of the XX century is outlined in general and its 2nd half, in particular; the main achievements and shortcomings of the multivolume explanatory “Dictionary of the Ukrainian language” are considered. In our study we use mainly descriptive method, which allows to classify and generalize linguistic facts. Of particular value today is the lexical composition of contemporary dictionaries, which reflects the heritage of mankind, new words of business language and cultural, social, economic, political spheres, the latter of which reflects the historical forms of socio-political situation. Finally, it is important to note that, despite the Russification tendencies, the Ukrainian lexicography of the 70s of the twentieth century laid a foundation for the comprehensive development of this component of linguistics of the period of independent Ukraine, demonstrated the longevity of national traditions in lexicography.
