DEVELOPMENT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE GRAMMAR COMPETENCE BY MEANS OF AUTHENTIC NEWS ARTICLES

Abstract

The article provides a theoretical analysis of the concept of grammatical competence, which consists of the formation of receptive and reproductive skills. Grammatical foreign language competence is considered in the article as the ability of students to recognize grammatical structures and use them correctly in full-fledged intercultural communication. It is noted that the teaching of grammar in a non-language institution of higher education is focused on the activation of grammar skills acquired at school and their awareness in a new professional and scientific context. The main attention is paid to the study of receptive grammatical reading skills, which aims to recognize grammatical forms and correlate them with a certain meaning. It is one of the prerequisites for the ability to understand other people’s opinions orally and in writing. An important task of the teacher is to formulate a rule-instruction that indicates the grammatical form and content of the grammatical phenomenon and should in a logical sequence set out the mental actions that must be performed by the student to recognize and understand the grammatical phenomenon in the text. The formation of receptive grammatical skills is an important condition for the formation of reproductive skills, which involves the correct use of grammatical phenomena in speaking and writing. The means for the development of foreign grammatical competence is the use of authentic news articles. This technique provides a connection with the life and practical use of language, involves the casual study of complex grammatical phenomena and the formation of foreign grammatical competence. The article presents the criteria for selecting news: relevance of the topic, language content, generativeness, suitability of the task. It is emphasized that attention should be paid to the grammatical features of news, which need to be explained to students before reading. The advantages of introducing information news at a foreign language lesson are noted.
